Creating a small home or office wireless network can be accomplished by most users who possess moderate technical skill. The most complex part of the process is determining what kind of router will meet your needs and where to locate it. Computers that are located in the same room as the wireless router will get a better signal than computers located in a distant room.

Creating Your Wireless Network

· Ensure both computers contain a wireless network card. The computer manufacturer can provide the most accurate information. You can also access Control Panel and look for a wireless icon. If the icon is there, computer has a wireless network card. If the computer does not have a wireless network card, you will need to purchase and install one.

· Determine what kind of wireless router you need and where you want to install the router. The router needs to be located close to a power outlet and an internet source connection. As noted above, computers located in the same room as the router will get a better signal.

· Plug the wireless router into the power source and into the Internet connection. You may also plug in a cable modem, switches and hubs to your wireless router. If your connection runs on DSL, connect your DSL modem. Once everything is connected, turn on the router

· Start your computer and open your web browser. Follow the connection instructions that came with the router to connect to and set up your network. The user name and password should be included in the documentation.

· Create your network name or SSID (service set identifier), rather than leaving the default settings in place. This prevents someone from logging in to your system. Set a password for the SSID. Continue through the prompts to set up other security features for your network.

· With both computers on, go to Start > My Network Places > All Other Users to locate the other computer. You are now connected.
